What Are Apps?

The word "app" is short for “application.”  Application, in this case, refers to a software application or a software program.

An app is a special type of software program. An app typically refers to software used on a smartphone or mobile device such as the Android, iPhone, BlackBerry or iPad, as in “mobile app” or “iPhone app.”

You can think of an app as being a “shortened” or narrow software application, that usually serves just one function or provides a small bit of entertainment. There are many different classifications of Mobile apps. Some examples include productivity or business, web access, entertainment, education, time management, and eReaders.
