Researching Local History

Research in local history can be very rewarding but it requires students to use different strategies along with their library research.  First, see what is available in your college library.

The CCC library in Auburn has a large local history room that is used by researchers, scholars and community members.  Many of the books and historical items do not circulate so you will have to visit the library to use them.

The CCC library in Fulton has a collection of local history books that covers the Oswego County area.

Then check this libguide for other resources.  Public libraries in the area often have exensive resources in local history and genalogy. The librarians can refer you to other local sources.  Look up the local historian or the local historical society for the village or town that you are researching.

Check out any museums in your area that deal with historical material. The people who work at the museums are often very knowledgable about their particular area of history.
